Taking care of your Oriental rug

Andrew Frith, from the UK's largest retailer of oriental carpets and rugs G H Frith shares his expert advice on caring for your Oriental rug.

"The Oriental rug is the quintessential classic - and whilst it's at home in any property style, there's no doubt it sits very well in a period property.

"Look at the number of knots per square inch, the complexity of the pattern and the execution of the weave before purchasing what can be an expensive but worthwhile purchase that will not only last a lifetime if property cared for - but can also be passed through the generations.

"Oriental Rugs can be very expensive to restore, and the price of a small repair can cost more than the rug itself! To avoid repair keep your rug in top condition, rotate it every few months to ensure colour and wear is kept even. Avoid placing it in areas with too much natural light in areas that have a lot of foot traffic.

"Always buy an underlay to protect it, especially if placed on a hard floor and use the suction only pipes on your vacuum cleaner to prevent damage to the wool pile."

If taken care of properly, an Oriental rug is an excellent investment and family heirloom - a true masterpiece that will never go out of style.
